Epic battle between Doctor Strange & Dire Wraith witches. All that and more!

I was gonna post this Aug. 1st but screw it I feel like posting this today. This is digital art composed of found images starting with this amazing rendering of Dr. Strange by Gabriele Dell'Otto. I just thought it would be cool to have him go up against some Dire Wraiths since he was one of ROM's best allies among Earth's heroes during the Rom spaceknight series. The Dire Wraith images were picked up from Annihilators #3 (Alex Garner) and Marvel Age magazine #23 (Bill Sienkiewicz).

Here we have ROM along with some of the most popular Marvel characters ever. Unfortunately, of those heroes featured only Wolverine had ever had an encounter with Rom. This one was done by Gary Martin "a Rom curator" who as you can see went balls out on digitally coloring it. Nice job Gary, I happen to know a little bit about digital coloring myself : )

And here we have yet another from Gary. No color on this one as you can see but the scene it sets up is among one of the most imaginative I've ever seen when it comes to ROM fan art.

Last but not least we've got one from artist Jay Potts. This one was one of those random finds on the internet. As you can see Jay took some creative liberties with ROM's armor but it looks pretty cool as an alternative concept. Plus, from a figure drawing stand point this piece is solid I love the pose he is in.

  1. That's a nice bit of photoshop mashing there.
The Dr Strange and Wraith paintings do not clash in either style nor positioning/angle.

    Top flight job!

As for a recent Doc vs Wraith witch battle, the recent FEAR ITSELF : THE FEARLESS had wraith witches going up against Doc and Daimon Hellstrom.
(But I think Daimon did more of the 1-on-1 with them, while Doc took on the "bigger picture".)

    1. thank you kind sir. ya know i was thinking, that if you had any of that "wraith witches going up against Doc and Daimon Hellstrom" FEARLESS stuff that uh maybe some of us might like to . . oh i dunno, see it posted somewhere?
i did browse through some FEARLESS issues a while back but all i found was a Dire Wraith getting a nasty surprise when she tried to tongue spike Luke Cage.

  2. The Dr. Strange piece looks like it was originally planned that way, Dave. Honestly, if you hadn't told me, I wouldn't have known you pieced it. I'm really impressed.

I love the other three, but the Jay Potts really stands out to me. Probably because, as you say, the figure is just amazing. I always have trouble with that bit myself, so I'm in awe of anyone who does it so well, and when it's in such a stark setting, it really pops.

    And really, "tongue spike". Gah.

  3. Yea Dave I've I hadn't already seen the original art piece of Dr. Strange I would never have guessed that you had spliced these Wraith Witches in!! Beautiful angles and willingness to strike at the right perspective!!

Jay Potts piece is to over the top I like the pose real bold stance!! I'm also lovin Gary's pencil drawing with Starshine's look reflected in Rom's armor very nice touch right along with the Witches drilling tongues lapping at him from behind Aaaaa!!

  4. You keep pulling rabbits out of the proverbial hat. I wish Michael Golden had done more ROM pieces, his covers were just phenomenal.

  5. Guys & gals, what can I say, it's a particular thrill to have seen my art put on display here at this marvelous place that we frequent. Never had aspirations of being an artist, but what you see above is two instances in my life when youngsters looked to me for inspiration and I showed them...ROM. About ten years ago a boy asked me for a picture of his favorite characters Wolvie, Spidey & Gambit, and he loved the silver guy I drew him in the center so much he made a t-shirt with it. Then just a few months ago, my 6-year-old son and I were drawing on the same sheet of paper; his stick-figure Spider-Man on one half, my pencil "Warn Him Starshine!" on the other. Good times! Thanks everyone for the comments left here, and as always keep up the good work Shlomo. Your Dr. Strange piece is awesome, what strikes me is the depth, how the Wraith head in the foreground really looks closer than the rest of it and the one in the back looks farther away, it's surprisingly 3-D for being a mashup...did you alter the focus or something to make it look that way?

    1. not at all actually it just pretty happened to be fit perfectly pretty much as is. the other Wraith in the picture needed some work. primarily in adding an arm to her somehow cause the original Bill Sienkiewicz was just a face only.

  6. I have been trying to comment on this post for days now - stupid "smart phone" wouldn't do the little 'prove you're not a robot' puzzles after the submit!

Firstly, that Dr Strange is one of Dell Otto's best, made better by giving him some freakin' adversaries worthy of a big move. The Gambit piece makes me wonder what modern star missed their chance to team with ROM most? And the other two I dig because you can see the pencils and way each was sketched, from the reflection in one to the thigh-high boots in the other :)

    1. unfortunately there's about a 5 year time gap between the last time Rom was on Earth as a spaceknight and when the Gambit character made his first appearance in the Marvel Universe. but honestly when i look at the Rom series as a whole i can't complain about how the writing integrated Rom into the Marvel Universe. i think that played a significant part in the relative success the series enjoyed.
